Simulacrum * Royal College of Art Degree Show 2026
This project began with an exploration and experimentation with materials. The designer developed a process using only transparent enamel, copper foil, and silver. By precisely controlling temperature and firing time, copper can migrate to the enamel surface. The formation of this color resembles an oxidation process, in which copper produces rich and subtle variations of green within the enamel. Seeking the purest possible green, the designer conducted extensive experimentation.
This process subjects each object to an extreme simplification. Surface details such as ornamentation, oxidation, and scratches are compressed from three dimensions into two, then reduced to lines, and eventually to clusters of points. When an ordered arrangement of these points is applied to the surfaces of different objects, all representational content is stripped away. The image and associative meanings of the objects are removed, leaving only their surfaces. What remains are the essential formal characteristics of each object: its scale, shape, and structure.
